The Family Process

step one
step four

Little ones aren't meant to sit still.  I want them to run and play and have fun.  My goal is to capture your family as they are and if this means I'm chasing a 2 year old down the beach, then so be it.  I like to get a few of what I call my grandparent shots.  These are  the shots grandparents love of everyone standing just so, looking at the camera, and smiling.  Once those are taken care of, it's time to just have fun and play with your kiddos.

I really want to do a family session, but I know my 2 year old won't cooperate!  How do you handle young kids that won't sit still for an hour long family session?

You're more than welcome to bring anything you'd like to incorporate into the session.  I do ask that you try to limit this to only one or 2 things.  I also like when parents show me these things prior to the session so I can make a plan for how to use them.

What happens if the baby doesn't cooperate?

Prior to transitioning to photography, I spent 17 years as a pediatric occupational therapist.  I have extensive training in anatomy, physiology, and development.  A large part of my job as an OT was training parents and caregivers how to safely handle and position medically fragile babies.  In addition, I had a pediatric ER physician observe me at work to help identify and problem solve any potential safety issues.  After seeing me do 3 newborn sessions I got her full stamp of approval.

How do you know the poses you do with the baby are safe?

34-36 weeks seems to be the sweet spot.  Moms have enough of a bump to look pregnant, but are still (relatively) comfortable.

How do you protect baby from germs/viruses?

Family Session FAQs

What age is baby when you do the sessions?

You have a lot of naked baby photos, don't they poop and pee on things?

Does it cost extra to include parents/sibling
in the sessions?

What do I need to bring to the session with me?

Can I bring my own outfits for the baby to wear of props from home?

At what point in a pregnancy do you like to do maternity photos?

I take your baby's health very seriously.  All backdrops, fabrics, and surfaces are thoroughly sanitized between sessions.  I'm up to date on all vaccinations and wear a mask throughout my studio newborn sessions.

It happens, not often, but it happens.  If I've tried all of my tricks, and believe me I have a lot of them, and your baby seems uncomfortable or isn't able to be soothed we'll end the session and try again another day.

I get pooped or peed on almost every session.  Such a glamorous job!  It's honestly no big deal.  My assistant or I will clean things up and keep doing our thing.

Ideally, babies are under 3 weeks for the posed studio sessions.  After this they can become more alert and difficult to get into some of the poses.  However, I've had success with babies up to 6 weeks old.  Once a baby gets past a month old my preference is to do a lifestyle session.  This allows me to document your little one's newness without the stress on them (and you) of intricate posing.

Just baby and milk, I'll take care of everything else!  I have diapers, wipes, a bottle warmer, drinks, and snacks in the studio. You're more than welcome to bring in a prop or 2 if there's something of meaning you have that you'd like to incorporate, but I have everything we need to beautifully style your session.

Absolutely not.  The immediate family is included in all of my newborn sessions.
