I get asked a lot if I prefer studio or lifestyle session with babies and I can’t choose a favorite.
Studio sessions are great because I get to be my nit picky detail oriented self. I love being able to play around with the coordination of different colors and textures to find exactly what fits that particular baby and family. Lighting is always the same in studio so it’s nice not having to worry about that component. Most importantly, I love the calm and slow process of the studio session. In this life we’re constantly in a rush. These sessions give me a chance to just step back, slow down, and breathe. Waiting is a big part of the process. It’s a good reminder that sometimes in life, in order to get the best results, we need to just sit back and wait.
On the other hand, the things that I love most about lifestyle sessions completely contradict what I love about studio sessions. Walking into a session, I never know what to expect from the lighting. I get pushed outside of my comfort zone and am forced to experiment in order to get the most out of the available light. I love to be in control. For the most part, I control the majority of a studio session. The family controls lifestyle sessions. Baby’s temperament, big brother’s mood, the dog’s interest in the baby – these are the things that control a lifestyle session. Challenges like this push me forward as a photographer and help me make gains that I wouldn’t make if I were just playing it safe.
Luckily, a lot of times, I get the opportunity to do both sessions with the same baby. Just like these sessions with Emilia. I love when families book my in home/studio combo session. It’s absolutely the best of both worlds. Find the details for the combo session
