Cake Smash Session Tips

I absolutely loved Ka’Noah’s first birthday cake smash session that I recently photographed in my studio. Since this session was absolutely amazing, I wanted to not only share all about it here on my blog. However, I also wanted to share cake smash session tips so your session can turn out equally gorgeous!

Cake Smash Session Tips

Try to keep your schedule as close to normal as possible the day of your session. Cake Smash sessions are done during the week, Monday through Friday, between 10am and 2pm. Why do I shoot during these hours? Because these sessions are done with natural light, and that’s when the light is coming through the main window. It’s nice and bright, but still soft – my favorite kind of light! Since there’s such a nice range of hours available, I will work with you to schedule your session around baby’s nap-time.

Parents and siblings are welcome to participate, but the main focus will be on baby.

Have a dry run at home with sweets.  Often babies come in and they’ve never had sugar and that can make for an unpredictable response.  Sometimes they take right to it and love it, but more often than not babies who’ve never had it don’t love it the way we think they would.  Maybe even put a spoonful of icing for them to play with in their high chair at home.  This lets them get used to the the taste and texture so that when smash time comes they don’t mind putting their hands in it and they’ve (hopefully) come to love the taste.

I know, I know: it’s totally crazy that we’re discussing “how to make your baby love sugar!

Keep the cake simple. Ka’Noah’s mom chose simple white cake with pale pink accents, which is perfect since most babies prefer the cake to the icing.  I love naked cakes because they have minimal icing and just look beautiful and natural.  Sometimes it’s a good idea to bring fresh berries to put on top.  That way, even if baby doesn’t like the cake, they’ll usually sit and munch on the berries long enough to get some cute photos!

Try out a bubble bath at home. Just like with sweets, it’s a good idea to test out a bubble bath at home prior to coming in for your cake smash session. Your baby might love bath time, but if they’ve never been in a bubble bath before?  They might be a little wary of the bubbles.

I’ll help you with outfit selections. Whether you borrow something from my client closet, you bring something from your own closet or you purchase something new – I am here to help! We will work together to make sure you have the perfect outfit! I’m a big fan of timeless and classic attire for cake smash sessions, with simple prints and solid colors.
